Just wondering how many epipens your child/ren have at school/kinder.

Josh's school keeps his epipen, zyrtec, ventolin and spacer at school and I have the second epipen etc. at home. The set that I gave to the school stays at school all the time and when he is taken off the school grounds they take it with him and also ask that I send the second epipen with him, just in case.

For those of you who have one epipen in the office, one in the classroom, do you take one home each night?

Just wondering what everyone else does in case there is a safer way for me to be handling Josh's allergies.

There are 9 children with anaphylaxis at our school this year [2 to bees, 7 to food] and all bar B2 have epipens at school... so there's ALOT of adrenaline there!!!
Epipens are ALWAYS taken with the kids whether it be to school swimming lessons / excursions [off-site] or on the oval for the faction carnival.

The epipens remain at school and are only brought home for the xmas holiday period.

We have 1 epipen at home and 1 stays in the car [or goes with B1 if she is away from me].

DS's school will be keeping a med kit in his classroom - They use a clear plastic tub with his photo stuck on the front. They have left it up to me what it will contain but I'm putting in... epi-pen (obviously), claratyne + syringe, asthma puffer + spacer/mask, a bottle of sunscreen that is safe for him to use (had one once that contained dairy), a marking pen as per AAI guidelines so if epi-pen is administered the time can be written on it, anaphylaxis action plan, an emergency contact card, was thinking about a bum bag for putting all meds in for excursions etc. but I think maybe they are planning on just taking the whole tub which isn't a bad thing saves missing moving something over into bag. The tub will be kept on a high shelf in the classroom so it is easily accessible by staff but too high for children to reach/play about with. It will be kept at school all the time.

They have a back up pen belonging to the school kept in the office and they are also considering given DS has more allergens than any of the other allergic students they have had in the past purchasing a second epi-pen themselves to keep in his class room. They have requested any excursions DS goes on that they are more comfortable if I attend too which means there will also be another epi-pen there as I always have one in my hand bag...

I'm not sure yet if I will be leaving him 1 or 2 pens at the school depends on what our new GP is willing to give us a script for I guess. But I'm hoping she will give me a script for at least one more so I can still keep two at home and one full time at the school. If she gives me a script for two more then I think i'll send both to the school encase they decide not to buy a second one themselves.

Maybe tell your GP that the SCHOOL has requested 2 epipens; one for class, one for sick room... that's what happened with our school. And that you need one for home... obviously! They can only try when they ring through for the authority script.

Our paediatrician at PMH actually offered me FOUR epipens; so I said "Yep, sure, that'd be super!"

Ahh, see that's what was confusing me! I always insist on having a script for 2 epipens but I had no idea that you could get more than that. I'm having a light bulb moment right now

I send one current Epipen and one that has just expired (it is labelled 2009 and the teacher knows to use as a backup only). I keep the other current one at home.

Hmm, that is interesting. I thought they would be limited to two on an authority script.

The GP only gave me a single dose last script, I didn't realise, went to have it filled and the pharmacist pointed it out that I was entitled to two. When I went back to the GP, she called the authority line and had to explain to them why she was making another request when one was only just issued. That is why I thought it was limited.

Obviously I need to try a little harder

The 4 epipens were prescribed by her PAEDIATRICIAN not her GP ... perhaps that's the difference. Oh and the paed didn't ring through for an authority script although our GP does... Go figure!

collected from PMH pharmacy? PMH can in-house prescribe whatever they like. outside scripts need authority. so i guess, technically, you could still get a script from the GP for 2 epipens :)

Jessi's medicine bag comes home every day and back to school every morning. we have the tools we need to leave it at school permanantly but i taught her that bag stays with her, so it comes home. it's not doing the school any use overnight and heaven forbid we ever need it, but it's an extra epipen at home if we do.

I always thought PBS only covers TWO epipen per year for children under 17 or 18yo, then only one per year afterwards. I remember reading it somewhere, but can't recall from where

Our allergist (who is the director of allergy unit of the hospital) still had to ring up to get authority for our EpiPens, while our GP can only do private script.
